About the Project

Unveiling Roots: Cape Verde Heritage in the Shadows of the Slave Trade is a cultural preservation initiative led by Djurtus United CIC. Running from April 1, 2025, to August 30, 2026, this project celebrates the Cape Verdean diaspora in Leeds, highlighting their unique history and contributions.

Cape Verde’s strategic role in the transatlantic slave trade shaped its culture—a fusion of African, Portuguese, and indigenous influences seen in its music (morna and coladeira), dance, and traditions like Festa de São João and Festa de Nossa Senhora da Luz. Our mission is to document these treasures, create a lasting archive, and share them through workshops, exhibitions, and digital platforms.
