Welcome to Unveiling Roots: Cape Verde Heritage in the shadows of the Slave Trade

Celebrating the Rich Cultural Heritage of the Cape Verdean Community – Funded by The Heritage Lottery Fund

We are proud to announce that we have received funding from The National Lottery to celebrate and preserve the vibrant cultural heritage of the Cape Verdean community.

This exciting project aims to shine a spotlight on the unique traditions, music, language, and stories that define Cape Verdean identity, particularly among communities here in the UK. With deep roots in resilience, migration, and cultural fusion, the Cape Verdean heritage is rich with history that deserves to be shared and celebrated.

Through this funding, we will engage community members—especially elders, young people, and artists—in a series of activities including:

Storytelling and Oral History Sessions – Capturing personal narratives from Cape Verdean elders to preserve for future generations.

Cultural Workshops – Exploring traditional music, dance, language (Kriolu), and cuisine.

Exhibitions and Community Events – Showcasing Cape Verdean art, photography, and artefacts.

Educational Outreach – Creating resources for schools and youth groups to learn about Cape Verdean culture and its contribution to British society.

This project not only helps preserve our heritage but also fosters intergenerational connection and cultural pride. We are incredibly grateful to The National Lottery players for making this possible and supporting our efforts to keep our stories and traditions alive.
